To the Athletes and Parents of Team Alaska,
This letter is in response to the cancellation of the Whitehorse 2020 Arctic Winter Games. Preparations for 2020 began as soon as the 2018 games were completed, and we are disappointed we are not able to take a team this year. The safety and health of our athletes is our first priority, and we support the decision of the Government of the Yukon and the Whitehorse Host Society to cancel the 2020 games.
The Team Alaska Board of Directors met and reviewed the financial consequences of the cancellation. We have determined a refund of $1000.00 to each paid registered athlete can be provided, while maintaining the mission of Team Alaska into the future. A refund of the full amount is not possible given operating costs and other cost commitments specific to the cancelled games that are not recoverable. In addition to these costs, Team Alaska heavily relies on volunteer hours, including those of our Board of Directors. We want to thank all of those who have donated their time and efforts to Team Alaska, including our Mission Staff, coaches, those helping with sorting uniforms, and everyone in between. We recognize that our athletes and parents are negatively affected by this cancellation and thank you for your understanding during these difficult times.
You will be receiving a refund check along with a Team Alaska 2020 pin set in the coming weeks.
Although the cancellation of the Games has caused a great inconvenience and is a great disappointment to us all, Team Alaska is committed to providing opportunities for Alaska’s youth into the future. We are grateful for your continued support and we look forward to the 2022 Games in Wood Buffalo, Alberta.
